Empyema and Selected Pleural Collections
Empyema is a collection of infected fluid or pus in the pleural space around the lungs. It often develops as a complication of pneumonia or another infection.
Symptoms
Fever, chest pain, cough, breathlessness and general weakness. Symptoms may persist despite antibiotics if infected fluid remains trapped.
How interventional radiology treats it
Image-guided drainage places a catheter into the pleural collection to remove fluid or pus. Samples are sent for testing, and antibiotics are given. Some collections are divided into pockets or are too thick to drain easily and may need additional procedures or surgery. Imaging and clinical monitoring guide treatment.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
