Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins, usually in the legs. They develop when vein valves do not work properly, allowing blood to collect in the veins.

Symptoms

Visible enlarged veins, aching, heaviness, itching, ankle swelling, skin darkening and, in advanced cases, ulcers. Symptoms often worsen after prolonged standing.

How interventional radiology treats it

Endovenous laser ablation or radiofrequency ablation closes the affected vein using heat delivered through a thin catheter. Ultrasound guides the procedure. Foam sclerotherapy or other techniques may be suitable for selected veins. Walking, leg elevation and compression stockings may help manage symptoms, depending on medical advice.

Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
