Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
DVT is the formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, most commonly in the leg. Risk factors include immobility, surgery, cancer, pregnancy and certain medical conditions. A clot may travel to the lungs.
Symptoms
One-sided leg swelling, pain, tenderness, warmth or redness. Some people have few noticeable symptoms.
How interventional radiology treats it
Blood-thinning medication is the main treatment for most patients. In selected severe cases, catheter-directed thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy may be considered to remove the clot. Compression or stenting may be used in specific circumstances. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain can indicate a pulmonary embolism and requires emergency assessment.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
