Pelvic Arteriovenous Malformations
Pelvic arteriovenous malformations are abnormal connections between arteries and veins in the pelvis. These vessels bypass the normal capillary network and may cause high blood flow through fragile abnormal channels.
Symptoms
Symptoms can include pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, swelling or, in some cases, no symptoms. The presentation depends on the malformation's location and size.
How interventional radiology treats it
Embolisation is used to close selected abnormal vascular channels. A catheter is guided to the feeding arteries, and specialised embolic material is delivered under imaging guidance. Detailed imaging and specialist planning are necessary because the normal pelvic organs must be protected. Some malformations require more than one treatment session and continued follow-up.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
