Pelvic Congestion Syndrome

Pelvic congestion syndrome is associated with enlarged pelvic veins and poor venous drainage. It can cause persistent pelvic pain, although other causes of pelvic pain must first be considered.

Symptoms

A dull pelvic ache, discomfort after prolonged standing, pain after sexual intercourse or worsening discomfort later in the day. Symptoms vary between individuals.

How interventional radiology treats it

Pelvic vein embolisation is used in selected patients when imaging confirms that abnormal veins are responsible for symptoms. A catheter is guided into the affected veins, and coils or another embolic material are used to close them. Assessment helps exclude other causes of pelvic pain, and symptom improvement varies.

Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
