Splenic Injury
Splenic injury is damage to the spleen, often caused by blunt abdominal trauma. The spleen has a rich blood supply, so injury may cause significant internal bleeding.
Symptoms
Pain in the upper left abdomen, tenderness, pain referred to the left shoulder, dizziness or signs of blood loss. Severe injury can cause shock.
How interventional radiology treats it
In selected stable patients, splenic artery embolisation can control bleeding while helping preserve the spleen. A catheter is guided into the splenic artery, and coils or other materials reduce blood flow to the bleeding area. Patients with severe instability or other complications may require surgery. Close monitoring is necessary.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
