Varicocele

A varicocele is an enlargement of veins inside the scrotum, similar to varicose veins in the legs. It occurs when blood does not drain properly through the testicular veins. It may be associated with discomfort or fertility problems.

Symptoms

A dull ache, heaviness in the scrotum, enlarged veins or testicular size changes. Discomfort may worsen after standing for long periods.

How interventional radiology treats it

Varicocele embolisation uses a catheter inserted through a vein to reach the abnormal testicular vein. Coils or another blocking material are placed to stop abnormal blood flow. It is usually performed without open surgery. Recovery is often short, but fertility outcomes and symptom improvement vary.

Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
