Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM)
An AVM is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins that bypasses the normal capillary network. It may be present from birth and can affect blood flow in the brain.
Symptoms
Some people have no symptoms. Others may experience headaches, seizures, weakness or other neurological problems. Bleeding can occur if the AVM ruptures.
How interventional radiology treats it
Embolisation involves guiding a catheter into the abnormal vessels and injecting a specialised material to reduce or block blood flow. It may be used before surgery, alongside other treatment or in selected cases as a treatment itself.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
