Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures
These fractures occur when a spinal vertebra weakens and collapses, commonly because of osteoporosis. They can develop after minor strain or a small fall.
Symptoms
Sudden or persistent back pain, reduced mobility, loss of height or a rounded upper back. Pain may worsen when standing or moving.
How interventional radiology treats it
Vertebroplasty involves injecting medical bone cement into a selected fractured vertebra. Kyphoplasty may use a balloon to create a cavity before cement placement. These procedures are considered for carefully selected patients with painful fractures. Imaging confirms the fracture and helps exclude other causes of pain. Not every fracture requires an intervention.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
