Thyroid Nodules

Thyroid nodules are lumps in the thyroid gland. Many are benign, but assessment is needed to determine whether a nodule requires observation, biopsy or treatment.

Symptoms

Many cause no symptoms. Larger nodules may produce a neck lump, pressure, difficulty swallowing or voice changes. Some affect thyroid hormone levels.

How interventional radiology treats it

Radiofrequency ablation may be used for selected benign nodules that cause symptoms or cosmetic concerns. A needle electrode is guided into the nodule under ultrasound, and heat reduces its volume over time. Ultrasound and biopsy results help establish suitability. Not all nodules are appropriate for ablation, and follow-up imaging is needed.

Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
