Ascites in Selected Cases
Ascites is the accumulation of fluid in the abdomen. It commonly occurs with advanced liver disease but may also be associated with cancer, heart disease or other conditions.
Symptoms
Abdominal swelling, discomfort, early fullness when eating, weight gain and breathlessness when fluid accumulation is substantial.
How interventional radiology treats it
Paracentesis removes abdominal fluid using a needle or catheter, often under ultrasound guidance. The fluid may be tested to identify the cause. Recurrent ascites may require repeated drainage. In selected patients with portal hypertension, TIPS may help reduce fluid accumulation. Treatment depends on the underlying disease and the patient's suitability for intervention.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
