Chylous Ascites
Chylous ascites is the accumulation of milky, fat-rich lymphatic fluid in the abdominal cavity. It can result from lymphatic vessel damage, surgery, cancer or other disorders.
Symptoms
Abdominal swelling, discomfort, reduced appetite and weight loss. Ongoing fluid loss can lead to nutritional problems.
How interventional radiology treats it
Fluid sampling helps confirm the diagnosis. In selected cases, specialised lymphangiography identifies the leaking lymphatic vessel, which may then be sealed through embolisation. Dietary changes and nutritional support may be used alongside treatment. Management depends on the cause and the amount of fluid being lost.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
