Liver Abscess
A liver abscess is a collection of pus within the liver, usually caused by infection. It may develop when bacteria or other organisms reach the liver through the blood or bile ducts.
Symptoms
Fever, chills, right upper abdominal pain, nausea, weakness and loss of appetite. Severe infection may cause confusion or low blood pressure.
How interventional radiology treats it
Image-guided drainage uses ultrasound or CT to guide a needle or drainage tube into the abscess. The collected material is sent for testing, and antibiotics are given to treat the infection. The drain remains in place until the collection improves. Some abscesses require surgery or additional treatment.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
