Ureteric Obstruction
Ureteric obstruction is a blockage in the ureter, the tube that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. Stones, tumours, scarring or pressure from nearby structures may cause it.
Symptoms
Side pain, nausea, blood in the urine, urinary infection or impaired kidney function. Symptoms depend on how quickly and completely the ureter becomes blocked.
How interventional radiology treats it
If normal drainage cannot be restored through the bladder, a nephrostomy tube may be placed through the back into the kidney. A stent can sometimes be inserted from above to keep the ureter open. Treatment of the underlying cause is also necessary.
Whether this treatment suits you depends on your scans and overall health. A consultation is the first step.
